The industry will take the next step in shortening SSL\/TLS certificate validity periods starting March 15, 2026. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of this past Friday (April 11, 2025), <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/groups.cabforum.org\/g\/servercert-wg\/c\/bvWh5RN6tYI\">the CA\/Browser Forum (CABF) officially voted<\/a> in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/groups.cabforum.org\/g\/servercert-wg\/c\/bvWh5RN6tYI\/m\/i_cKUrRjCQAJ\">Ballot SC-081v3<\/a>, a Sectigo-sponsored measure that will reduce the current 398-day maximum certificate validity period to no more than 47 days by March 15, 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn why these changes are happening, when they\u2019ll be implemented, and how you can start preparing for this transition to a shorter certificate validity period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TL;DR: A 30-Second Overview of the Changes to the Certificate Validity Period<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Got your cup of coffee ready? It\u2019s time to dive in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apple\u2019s proposed ballot was officially approved by CABF leaders on April 11, 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The current 398-day certificate validity period for SSL\/TLS certificates will be reduced in three phases, starting March 15, 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The reuse period of certificates\u2019 subject identity validation data (i.e., your organization\u2019s business information) will also be reduced to a maximum of 398 days starting in March 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The current 398-day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sectigo.com\/knowledge-base\/detail\/Domain-Control-Validation-DCV-Methods\/kA01N000000brbt\">domain validation<\/a> data reuse period for SSL\/TLS certificates will decline to 10 days by 2028.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These changes apply only to publicly trusted SSL\/TLS certificates; they don\u2019t apply to other digital certificates (e.g., code signing and document signing certificates).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When These Changes Will Roll Out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, now that you know what changes will occur, it\u2019s time to break down when they\u2019ll happen and why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SSL\/TLS Certificate Validity Periods Drop to 47 Days By 2029<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>March 15, 2026:<\/strong> The validity period for certificates issued on\/after this date will be a maximum of 200 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 15, 2027:<\/strong> The maximum validity for certificates issued on\/after this date will be reduced to 100 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 15, 2029:<\/strong> Certificates issued on or after this date will have a maximum validity of no more than 47 days (or, what basically equates to 1.5 months).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subject Data Validation Data Reuse Drops to 13 Months Starting in 2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current <strong>825-day validity data reuse period<\/strong> will be reduced to <strong>398 days<\/strong> for all <a href=\"https:\/\/sectigostore.com\/ssl-types\/ov-ssl-certificates\">organization validation<\/a> (OV) and <a href=\"https:\/\/sectigostore.com\/ssl-types\/ev-ssl-certificates\">extended validation (EV) SSL\/TLS certificates<\/a> issued on or after <strong>March 15, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Domain Validation Data Reuse Periods Drop to 10 Days By 2029<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>March 15, 2026:<\/strong> The maximum reuse period for domain validation data will drop to 200 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 15, 2027:<\/strong> The SAN-related validation data reuse period will be reduced to 100 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 15, 2029:<\/strong> On or after this date, domain validation data will only be reusable for up to 10 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview: Reasons for the Changes &amp; Their Impacts on Your Company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to break down what this shift to shorter validity periods (both for certificates and their validation data) means for your team and organization as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>What Aims to Be Accomplished<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Impacts on Your Organization and Team<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Shortened certificate validity periods are thought to reduce exposure risks in the event of a key compromise<\/td><td>Poses an operational burden on your IT team when relying on manual certificate methods<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Organizations will naturally shift to using reliable certificate management automation in lieu of manual methods<\/td><td>Automation solutions are common in enterprise environments but pose challenges and additional costs to smaller organizations<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Addresses vulnerabilities and algorithmic changes to ensure certificates and keys are created using secure cryptographic algorithms, libraries, and components<\/td><td>Certificate automation ensures your organization uses the most secure cryptography without being inundated with tedious certificate management-related tasks<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Certificates represent a moment in time, so organization validation data can become outdated or inaccurate.
