What does Comodo CA Rebranding as Sectigo<\/g> Mean for Customers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the 1st of November 2018, Comodo CA announced that it will be rebranded as Sectigo<\/g> (pronounced Sec-TEE-go) moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few customers have asked questions regarding the state of existing Comodo (or Sectigo<\/g>) certificates, their validity, and how the rebranding will affect them. In this article, we’ll give you a complete overview of Comodo CA\u2019s rebranding as Sectigo<\/g>, the reasons behind this move, and how (or if) it affects existing customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Comodo CA is Rebranding as Sectigo<\/g><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On October 31, 2017, Comodo CA was acquired by Francisco Partners, a
private equity firm that invests in technology-centered businesses. However, Francisco Partners only acquired the certificate authority part of Comodo so there is still Comodo Cybersecurity that sells security products like cWatch and antivirus software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Comodo CA had not been rebranded as Sectigo<\/g>, there would have been two separate entities called Comodo co-existing within the same industry. This could potentially lead to a number of confusions and issues down the line. Comodo\u2019s rebranding as Sectigo<\/g> is a strategic move to avoid any potential confusion with brand names. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second reason for the rebranding, as outlined by Bill Holtz, the CEO of Sectigo<\/g>, is that Sectigo<\/g> is expanding beyond SSL certificates into IoT, broader website security, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comodo CA Rebranding to Sectigo: What\u2019s Changing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  • The company\u2019s name is changing from Comodo CA to Sectigo<\/g> to prevent any confusion with Comodo Cybersecurity.<\/li>
  • The company is expanding into other aspects of website security and IoT.<\/li>
  • Some of the company\u2019s product names will be updated. For example, the Comodo SSL product line will become Sectigo<\/g> SSL.<\/li>
  • Customers will receive a new trust logo that they\u2019ll be able to use in their websites to replace the Comodo TrustLogo.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Comodo CA Rebranding to Sectigo: What\u2019s Staying the Same?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    • You can rely on the same SSL certificate products you know and love.<\/li>
    • All customer support platforms and employee phone numbers will remain the same.<\/li>
    • The rebranding will not shuffle or change the company\u2019s set of executives and teams.<\/li>
    • Customers will not have to change, reissue or reinstall their active SSL certificates.<\/li>

      How Will the Rebranding Affect Active SSL\/TLS Certificates? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
      • As already mentioned above, Comodo CA\u2019s rebranding as Sectigo<\/g> will not affect the currently active SSL\/TLS certificates.<\/li>
      • Existing certificates will remain active and effective.<\/li>
      • Customers will still be able to get the same level of support from the same channels of communication.<\/li>
      • The pricing structure will remain the same.<\/li>
      • The new TrustLogo will be sent to customers over email and they can implement it in their websites.<\/li>
      • Starting in January, new certificates will be issued using the Sectigo<\/g> brand instead of Comodo.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
